How to read a before & after

A single photo rarely tells the whole story. Scalp micropigmentation is a cosmetic tattoo that recreates the look of shaved hair follicles, and the finished result is built up gradually across multiple sessions — not in one sitting. Understanding what shapes a result helps you compare photos fairly and picture your own outcome realistically.

  Results develop over sessions. Density is layered in over two to four sessions spaced a couple of weeks apart. The first pass builds the foundation; later passes deepen the look. A “before” next to a fully healed final result is the fair comparison.

  Healing changes the look week to week. Fresh pigment often looks darker and sharper for the first several days, then softens as the skin settles. The most honest “after” is a fully healed photo, not a same-day one.

  Lighting and camera matter. Harsh overhead light, flash, angle, and phone processing all shift how pigment reads. Two photos taken minutes apart under different light can look like different results — so look for consistent lighting across a before and after.

  Pigment fades gradually. SMP is designed to soften slowly over years rather than stay fixed forever, and most clients return for a periodic refresh. See how long SMP typically lasts.

  Skin type and existing hair vary. How pigment holds and blends depends on skin tone, oiliness, scar tissue, and how much of your own hair remains around the treated area. Blending pigment into existing hair reads differently than full coverage on a shaved scalp.
