The short answer
If your hair loss is bothering you and you’ve started reading about SMP, you probably already suspect it might help — you just want someone to be straight with you about whether it fits your case. Here it is: most people with male pattern baldness, a receding hairline, crown or diffuse thinning, female thinning, stable alopecia, or hair-transplant scars are good candidates for scalp micropigmentation. Scalp micropigmentation is a cosmetic tattoo procedure that uses thousands of tiny pigment impressions to replicate the appearance of natural shaved hair follicles.
Some people, though, are better off waiting — or checking with a doctor first. We’ll walk through both honestly below. The only way to know for certain is an in-person look, which is exactly what the free consultation is for.
What SMP can realistically do for the right candidate

Just as important is what it doesn’t do: SMP does not regrow hair, create new follicles, or change the length of your hair. It adds the appearance of follicles and density. Knowing that up front is part of being a happy candidate.
Who may be a good candidate for SMP

Male pattern baldness (Norwood 2–7)
The most common case. Whether you're softening a receded front or covering a fully bald scalp, SMP replicates the look of a natural shaved buzz across the whole head.

This is the part most studios skip, so we’ll say it clearly. In the situations below, the honest answer is often “not right now” — either because the scalp needs to heal or settle, or because something should be checked by a medical professional first. We do not diagnose medical conditions, and nothing here is medical advice. If any of these apply, we recommend consulting a qualified healthcare provider about your scalp before considering SMP.
Active scalp irritation, breakouts, or open skin
Pigment shouldn't be worked into inflamed, broken, or irritated skin. Once the area has calmed and healed, candidacy can be reassessed — often you simply need to wait.
An active or suspected scalp infection
Any sign of infection needs to clear first. This isn't a permanent no — it's a not-yet, and something to have checked by a healthcare provider before booking.
Sudden or unexplained hair loss
Rapid or patchy loss that appeared without explanation is worth having evaluated by a doctor first, so any treatable underlying cause is addressed before cosmetic work.
Active inflammatory scalp disease
Ongoing inflammatory scalp conditions should be managed and stable under a provider's care before SMP is considered. We coordinate around your doctor's guidance, not around it.
Fresh, poorly healed, or immature scars
Scar tissue needs time to fully mature — usually many months — before it takes pigment predictably. Working too early risks an uneven result, so patience pays off here.
Expectations that SMP can't meet
SMP creates the appearance of shaved follicles and added density. It does not grow hair or change the length of your hair. If that gap matters to you, an honest consult is the place to talk it through.
Unable to follow the aftercare
Healing well depends on simple aftercare — keeping the area dry and protected from heavy sweat and sun for a short window. If that isn't realistic right now, it's worth waiting until it is.

SMP creates the look of a closely shaved head of hair or added density — it is an illusion of follicles built with pigment, not real hair. It won’t grow, and on a bald scalp the natural look is a buzzed style rather than long hair.

Can I get SMP if I have alopecia?+
Often, yes — many forms of alopecia can be a great fit once the condition is stable. Does SMP work for thinning hair, or only fully bald heads?+
It works for both. On a bald or shaved head it recreates the look of a full buzz; on thinning hair it places pigment between existing hairs to reduce how much scalp shows through, so the area reads fuller. SMP adds the appearance of density — it does not regrow hair or create new follicles.
I had a hair transplant — am I still a candidate?+
Usually yes. SMP is commonly used to camouflage FUT strip and FUE punch scars and to add the appearance of density between grafts when a transplant left thinner coverage than hoped. Scars generally need to be fully matured and healed first, which we confirm at your consultation.
