Will it look natural — will people know?

Done right, no. The point of SMP is to recreate the look of a closely-shaved scalp at the same pigment depth and color as a real follicle would sit at. Most clients tell me people compliment the haircut without realizing anything was done.

Is scalp micropigmentation the same as a hair tattoo?

A lot of people call it a “hair tattoo” or “scalp tattoo,” and the concept is similar — but SMP isn’t a regular tattoo. We use pigment made specifically for the scalp, placed at a shallower depth with a fine micro-needle to mimic individual hair follicles. That’s why it stays a crisp, natural-looking dot instead of spreading or turning blue/green the way body-tattoo ink can. The result reads as a real buzzed hairline, not ink.

Is SMP safe? What pigments do you use?

Yes — SMP is a controlled cosmetic procedure performed under California state cosmetic-tattoo licensing. I use pigments formulated specifically for SMP, not standard tattoo ink — they hold their tone cleanly over years and don't shift blue or green like body tattoo inks can. The studio follows full sterilization protocol on every session.

Can I still shave my head or grow my hair out?

Both. SMP is designed to blend with a shaved or buzzed look, and you can still grow your existing hair over it. The pigment sits in a layer that doesn't interfere with the follicles you already have.

How long until I can work out, swim, or shower normally?

Accepted Answer

Minimal. You'll have mild redness for 24 to 48 hours. Avoid sweating, swimming, and direct sun for 4 to 5 days between sessions. Most clients return to work the same day.

Do you teach SMP — is the SMP Academy taking students?

Yes. Joe runs the SMP Academy out of the same San Lorenzo studio. Training programs cover technique, machine work, pigment theory, and client consultation. Inquire directly for current cohort dates and tuition.

Do you treat women, scars, and alopecia?

Yes — I treat alopecia areata, FUT/FUE hair transplant scars, hair loss during and after pregnancy, and male pattern baldness. Every consultation starts with a look at your specific scalp, scarring, and goal — not a one-size template.
