SMP and Sun Exposure: Why UV Is the Number-One Cause of Fading
Ultraviolet light is what softens scalp micropigmentation over the years — and it is the one variable you genuinely control.
Does the sun fade scalp micropigmentation?
Yes. Ultraviolet light breaks down the pigment particles sitting in the upper layers of your scalp, so sun-exposed SMP softens and lightens faster than protected SMP. UV is the single biggest factor in how quickly scalp micropigmentation fades — and the one you control most directly.

When your artist’s instructions override this page
Aftercare protocols differ between artists, and sun rules differ more than most. If the sheet your artist gave you says something different from what you read here, follow theirs. Different pigments, needles, and depths change how a scalp should be treated afterward, and your artist is the only person who has seen your skin. This page is the general framework, not a second opinion on work we did not perform. These calls are theirs:
- How many days they want you out of the sun after each session.
- When they clear sunscreen onto the treated area for the first time.
- Which kind of sunscreen they want going on their pigment.
- Whether a hat or a wrap suits your healing window, especially after scar work.
- Anything involving a skin condition, or a product your dermatologist prescribed.
Lost the sheet? Ask for another — every reputable studio sends one. If your artist is unreachable and you are unsure, err toward shade until you can ask. Nobody ever hurt a result by staying out of the sun an extra week.
Why UV breaks down pigment
What ultraviolet light does to pigment particles
SMP places thousands of tiny pigment impressions in the upper layers of the scalp. That shallow placement keeps each dot crisp — and leaves the particles exposed to ultraviolet radiation, which carries enough energy to break chemical bonds. That is photodegradation, the same process that fades car paint. UVA goes deeper than UVB and passes through window glass, so this is never a beach-only problem. Why the scalp takes more UV than almost anywhere else
The top of the head faces the sky, and a shaved scalp has lost the hair that used to shade it. It compounds in the usual California ways: UV climbs with altitude, water and pale concrete bounce light back up under a hat brim, and clouds are not the shield people assume. The exposure is cumulative and quiet — a commute, a lunch outside, a Saturday of errands.
Why lighter and greyer blends show it first
A darker, denser blend has visual room to soften before anyone notices. A deliberately light one — a soft hairline, a diffuse-thinning pass, a salt-and-pepper match — works with a narrower margin, so the same UV reads sooner. Hairlines and temples are also the most exposed part of the head.

The healing window: why direct sun is off the table
For roughly two weeks after each session the surface is renewing over the impressions. The pigment is at its most vulnerable then, and freshly worked skin sunburns more readily than usual — a skin-health issue before it is a cosmetic one.
Sunscreen is the wrong tool in that window. Shade, timing, and a loose, clean hat are the protection. And because every session restarts the clock for the area worked, the rule applies after each appointment, not only the first.
After healing: the rules that never expire
Once healed, sun care becomes a habit rather than a rule: sunscreen or a hat when you are out, more care on high-UV days, no tanning beds. The same guidance any dermatologist gives any shaved head.
To be precise about what we are not claiming: SMP is long-lasting but not unchanging, and it softens gradually no matter what you do. Sun protection does not stop that, and I will not tell you it does. What is true is narrower — UV is the largest single influence on how fast that softening happens, and unlike your skin type or your genetics, it is the part you can actually change. Results vary.
How to protect SMP from the sun
Six steps, in the order they matter.
Keep direct sun off a healing scalp
For roughly two weeks after each session, no sunscreen goes on healing skin. Use shade, timing, and a loose, clean hat.
Once healed, make broad-spectrum sunscreen the default
Broad-spectrum SPF 30 or higher on uncovered skin is standard sun-safety guidance, and a shaved head is uncovered skin.
Reapply on the schedule the label gives you
Sweat, towels, and hat bands all take sunscreen with them. Most people lose protection at reapplication, not application.
Wear a hat for long days outdoors
A brim plus shade beats a sunscreen applied at 9am and forgotten. A hat never wears off.
Avoid the peak-UV block when you can
Midday sun is the strongest sun. Moving a run or yard work to early morning costs you nothing.
Skip tanning beds and deliberate scalp tanning
No intentional UV exposure is kind to a cosmetic tattoo, and health authorities advise against indoor tanning generally.
Sunscreen and SMP: what to look for
We make and sell no sunscreen, so there is nothing here to steer you toward. Use an established broad-spectrum product.
Broad-spectrum, and why that word matters
“SPF” alone describes protection at the sunburn end of the spectrum. “Broad spectrum” is a regulated term meaning the product was tested against UVA as well. For the sun-protection guidance itself, read the American Academy of Dermatology’s sunscreen FAQs. I would rather send you to dermatologists than restate their work as my own.
Mineral vs. chemical filters on a shaved scalp
Mineral sunscreens use zinc oxide or titanium dioxide and sit on the surface; chemical filters absorb into the top layer. The difference on a shaved head is cosmetic — mineral formulas can leave a white cast that reads oddly over pigment work, though tinted versions handle it. If you have eczema, psoriasis, seborrheic dermatitis, or any diagnosed scalp condition, that choice belongs with your dermatologist.
The shine problem — and where to read more
Sunscreen is one of the top causes of a scalp that photographs glossy, and shine is the fastest way to make good SMP look less natural. It is its own subject, covered in the guide to SMP shine control.
Reapplication reality: sweat, towels, and hats
Almost nobody loses protection at the application step. Sweat carries sunscreen off a scalp fast, a towel takes it in one pass, and a cap band scrubs a stripe across your hairline. Reapply on the label’s schedule, and treat “I put it on this morning” as the start of your protection, not all of it.
Hats, shade, and coverage — the protection people stick with
The best sun protection is the kind you do not have to remember. A hat does not wear off and adds no shine. A wide brim covers more than a cap, but the cap you actually wear beats the brim in your hallway. Wash them — the band sits right on your hairline. Shade is free, and moving an outdoor plan out of the middle of the day removes more UV than any product does.
If part of why you got SMP was to stop reaching for a hat every morning, this is not a suggestion to go back to hiding. It is a suggestion to use one on the long, bright days.
Tanning beds, spray tans, and self-tanner
Tanning beds are a no. A bed puts concentrated ultraviolet light straight onto the scalp — the exposure that breaks pigment down fastest. Dermatology bodies including the American Academy of Dermatology advise against indoor tanning for skin-health reasons that have nothing to do with tattoos. Deliberate outdoor scalp tanning is the same exposure with a better view.
Sunless tanning is different. Spray tans and self-tanners involve no UV, so they carry no pigment-breakdown problem, and on healed skin they are generally uneventful. The catch is cosmetic: a darker tan narrows the contrast between scalp and pigment, so the work can read lighter until it wears off. Keep them off skin that is still healing.
And no, a tanned scalp does not “hide” thinning hair — that one belongs with the other hair loss myths worth retiring.
Beach, boats, pools, and altitude: the high-UV situations
Some environments hand you more ultraviolet than the hours suggest, because light arrives from below as well as above.
- Boats and open water. Reflected light, no shade, and a breeze that hides the burn until it has happened.
- Beach days. Sand reflects, umbrellas move with the sun, and most people underestimate a full day by hours.
- Pools. Water strips product and reflects light. Water resistance on a label is time-limited.
- Altitude and snow. UV climbs as you go up, and snow reflects hard. A Sierra ski day is a high-UV day whatever the temperature.
- Driving and cycling. UVA passes through window glass, and long saddle time puts the crown at a direct angle for hours.
All of that assumes you are fully healed — pools, ocean, hot tubs, and saunas stay off the list until roughly day 28 to 30 after your final session.
Does SMP itself protect your scalp from the sun?
No. Pigment impressions in the scalp are not sunscreen, not a physical barrier, and not equivalent to melanin. A treated scalp burns exactly as easily as an untreated one, and looking darker does not mean it is shielded. Protect your scalp the way any shaved head should be protected, and take anything you notice on your own skin to a physician or dermatologist.
Signs the sun has already softened your work
Softening is gradual, which is why people notice it in a photograph rather than a mirror. The most exposed areas go first: hairline and temples lose crispness before the back does, the crown lightens ahead of the sides, contrast drops, and the tone can shift cooler or greyer. Put a photo from the month your series finished next to one from today in the same light — that comparison is more honest than memory.
